Lifestyle blog by a thirty-something city dweller

Other than England…

…or wherever your home country is, where would you like to spend Christmas? Is there somewhere you’ve been that you’d like to go to again for Christmas? Or is there somewhere you’ve never been to that you’d love to visit at Christmas time?

As a family, we have had Christmas in a few different places over the years and it doesn’t bother me if we’re not at home in the UK, which I know doesn’t ring true for a lot of people. For me, home is wherever my family is so the actual location isn’t the most relevant aspect of our festivities but I’ve had lots of friends say it wouldn’t feel like Christmas if they weren’t at home. My 2016 review

We’re a week from Christmas and two weeks from the end of the year, so I thought I’d do a little review of my 2016 highlights. I’m not one to set New Year’s resolutions but I try to work hard and have lots of fun every year and 2016 has been no exception. Continue reading…

Christmas traditions

For me, Christmas is all about family and friends. It doesn’t matter where in the world we are (and we’ve been in many far-flung places) but it does matter that we spend time together. Away from that, we don’t really have any specific traditions that we follow year after year.

I know quite a few people have the tradition of a ‘Christmas Eve box’ which usually contains new pjs, a movie, and a few other bits. Some people have a set routine for Christmas Day with church, family walks, a visit to the local pub, lunch/dinner at a set time, etc. Continue reading…

My dread of a work Christmas party

I have to admit that I am not a fan of work Christmas parties. I did go to mine this year but drove (so no drinking) and stayed for only about 2 hours. Don’t get me wrong, I like my colleagues very much. They’re a good bunch to work with, we get along well and are a great team. My opinion on work parties definitely says more about me than it does my colleagues and reaches back much further than my current employment but I’m just not comfortable in that kind of social situation. Sure, I’ve been on nights out with some of my workmates but Christmas parties are just a different situation entirely and I find them so awkward.  Continue reading…

Christmas movie night

It’s the weekend and no doubt many of you are recovering from work Christmas parties. The perfect time then to settle in for a movie night. There are so many festive films to choose from and everyone has their favourites and a list of the ones they don’t like.

On day 10 of blogmas, I’m going to share a few of my recommendations with you. Continue reading…

Blogmas Day 8

Whilst I can’t believe I’m now on day 8 of my quest to complete blogmas and had been planning on posting about work Christmas parties (mine’s tomorrow), I’ve done quite a lot of Christmassy things recently so thought I’d write a little run-down of them instead.

Christmas trip to London

Now, I feel like so many people are desperate to visit Winter Wonderland and see the Oxford Street lights every year. But I’m here to tell you that you really shouldn’t bother. Continue reading…

3 easy DIY tree decorations for non-craft people

I love putting up my Christmas tree. I have a compact, easy-to-put-up artificial tree (real ones aren’t my preference) with two-tone green needles giving it a pretty good natural look. My tree decorations are an eclectic mix of old, new, bought and hand-made items. And I love coming home from work, leaving the main lights off but putting the tree lights on. It gives me such a calm, warm, festive feeling.

Why I don’t have a niche

I originally started this blog in 2014 as part of the UCBloggers. Sorry to those who already know this story but here’s a little recap…Myself and 3 others were the first wave of UCBloggers, employed by University College Birmingham to write about student life. We were on different courses and at different stages of our degree programmes and were encouraged to write about our experiences as students, at UCB, living in Birmingham, etc. After writing for a year, I finished uni, graduated, started work and stopped blogging.

12 months later and I’d really missed it so I re-started this blog and decided to continue writing about a variety of topics and about life in general, thus gaining the label of a ‘lifestyle blog’. Continue reading…
