Christmas Jumper Day

Today is my favourite working day of the year – it’s Christmas Jumper Day! For the last 5 years, ITV’s Text Santa has been the driver for the day with them choosing a range of charities to give the collected money to. This year, though, there’s no Text Santa but a number of charities are still using Christmas Jumper Day as a fundraising opportunity. Continue reading…

My Christmas biscuit recipes

I love to bake and I especially love to bake at Christmas time. For yourself, to share, or for gifts, home-baked goods can be easy to make and really yummy! Over the years, I’ve perfected my Christmas biscuit recipes and I’m going to share two of them with you in this post. One is a classic (with a little twist) and the other is a simple but versatile option. Continue reading…

Go-to gift ideas

Gift-buying is a real skill; one that not everyone has. Obviously, it’s really easy when someone gives you a wish-list or makes hints all year round about what they want. But if there aren’t any clear indications then it can be a real challenge.

Not just that but navigating the shops at this time of year is just terrifying. I popped into the Bullring one evening last week, knowing exactly what I was headed for and where to get it from, yet it still took an hour of battling the slow-walking crowds and it left me with a headache!

When you’re really stuck and just don’t know where to begin, here are a few prompts to help…. Continue reading…

Christmas traditions

For me, Christmas is all about family and friends. It doesn’t matter where in the world we are (and we’ve been in many far-flung places) but it does matter that we spend time together. Away from that, we don’t really have any specific traditions that we follow year after year.

I know quite a few people have the tradition of a ‘Christmas Eve box’ which usually contains new pjs, a movie, and a few other bits. Some people have a set routine for Christmas Day with church, family walks, a visit to the local pub, lunch/dinner at a set time, etc. Continue reading…

My dread of a work Christmas party

I have to admit that I am not a fan of work Christmas parties. I did go to mine this year but drove (so no drinking) and stayed for only about 2 hours. Don’t get me wrong, I like my colleagues very much. They’re a good bunch to work with, we get along well and are a great team. My opinion on work parties definitely says more about me than it does my colleagues and reaches back much further than my current employment but I’m just not comfortable in that kind of social situation. Sure, I’ve been on nights out with some of my workmates but Christmas parties are just a different situation entirely and I find them so awkward.  Continue reading…

Winter skincare

Whilst I’m probably not the best person to advise on beauty regimes (find out why here), I am going to share my tips for a winter skincare routine. I know I’m not alone with feeling washed out and like a dried up prune during the cold, wet winter months. Simply put, my skin hates the winter.

Over the years, I’ve tried and tested different regimes, lotions, potions, creams and scrubs to see what works best for me. Here are a few of my recommendations:

Christmas movie night

It’s the weekend and no doubt many of you are recovering from work Christmas parties. The perfect time then to settle in for a movie night. There are so many festive films to choose from and everyone has their favourites and a list of the ones they don’t like.

On day 10 of blogmas, I’m going to share a few of my recommendations with you. Continue reading…

Blogmas Day 8

Whilst I can’t believe I’m now on day 8 of my quest to complete blogmas and had been planning on posting about work Christmas parties (mine’s tomorrow), I’ve done quite a lot of Christmassy things recently so thought I’d write a little run-down of them instead.

Christmas trip to London

Now, I feel like so many people are desperate to visit Winter Wonderland and see the Oxford Street lights every year. But I’m here to tell you that you really shouldn’t bother. Continue reading…

Customised advent calendars

Don’t get me wrong, I love opening a window with chocolate behind it every morning and I’m grateful to have two this year – one from my employer and one from the PR company we work with. But, I also love my memories of being a child and having the beautiful hand-crafted one my mum made for us. It was a big fabric christmas tree with a bag full of lovely little decorations – we had to close our eyes and pick one decoration out of the bag every day and hang it on one of the little bells on the tree. By Christmas, the tree was full of decorations.

Over the last few years, more and more ‘alternative’ advent calendars have been sold. From craft beers to designer make-up; gin to candles. Continue reading…
